Member value projects

Market Development.
  • Research is under way to identify potential local markets for the sale of nuts produced by our members. A professional has been contracted to perform this research.
  • A survey is being developed by a team of members. The purpose of this survey will be to get some feedback from members to judge their interest in market development, and to capture their knowledge and contributions.
Industry Development.
  • An letter will be sent to all know processors. It will invitation them to participate in industry and market development as well as renewed participation in the societies affairs. This invitation is based on the assumption that all members will benefit when the macadamia nut industry works towards a common goal.
Research.
  • The society has concluded that the Fruit Driller Caterpillar (Guava Moth) represents a real potential danger to NZ macadamia nut production and exports. It has therefore taken the following pro-active decisions:
  •

    • Contribute to a NZ wide research fund, lead by the NZ Tree Crop Association, for the next 3 years.
    • Pay for the identification of any suspected Fruit Driller Caterpillar (Guava Moth) that is found and reported by members. This funding is available for the current season to the end of 2009. A process for the reporting to a specialist science team (John Clearwater) will be published on the web site.
    • Collate and publish all confirmed finds of Fruit Driller Caterpillar (Guava Moth).
    • Monitoring of Fruit Driller Caterpillar (Guava Moth) in selected macadamia nut orchards in cooperation with the Tree Crop Association.
Quality Program.
  • The development of the MAC-ACC program, spearheaded by Richard Ward, is ongoing. This program will be an essential part of market development.
Communications & Information Exchange.
  • Newsletter. Four newsletters are planned per year. Funding for the production and distribution is approved.
  • Web site. This is evolving to become an important information source. It encourages dialogue between members through the discussion forum. Funding for hosting and development has been approved.
